My brothers and I were born in the decade World War Two ended. We grew up running around the house in our father's old army gear and playing with the things he brought back from the war. He served in the Pacific where these planes featured. As a child I built plastic models of war planes, (like a lot of boys at that time). As my own sons grew up some of these childhood things were revisited. Partly then, this work becomes autobiographical.
I bought plastic models, built, painted, photographed and downloaded them onto the computer. Then I worked off the photos and models. They were meant to remain as models. The propellers aren't turning and there are no pilots in the planes. There is something not quite real about them.
Everything is one step removed from the actual object and has gone through a digital process. By bringing the aircraft into a contemporary setting and using a digital process, time gets played with in these works, as well as the nature of reality.
These paintings suggest nothing is as it seems. They are not political, or about war as such.
