Lady Stardust - Bridget Barnett

This vibrant body of works is an intensive exploration of the definition of a painting. Commencing on the two-dimensional plane, this evolutionary enquiry progresses to organic planar forms - freed from the confines of the canvas - moving into the realm of three-dimensional contoured and convex paintings, where the traditional covering is disregarded and the form itself becomes the canvas.

Exploring the liminal space that sits somewhere between painting and sculpture, converse and concave surfaces create optical interference patterns. Machine and handmade forms are juxtaposed with horizontal and vertical planes, vibrant colour palettes and gloopy drips.

Artist Statement
“I create colourful works of art to inspire hope, joy and wonder in the everyday. In my creative practice, I am constantly driven through play to discover how far I can push the boundaries of my works within the media I use.”
Artist Bio
Bridget’s work could be described as experimental Pop Abstraction, informed significantly by vibrant colour, texture, contrast, and ironic visual contradiction that carries a wilful (and mischievous) disregard for convention. While not taking herself too seriously, Bridget’s work is about endurance and hopefulness as she celebrates life, humour, and the world around her.
Of Irish and Scottish descent, Bridget moved to Kirikiroa in 2021 to study for her Bachelor of Contemporary Art, graduating earlier this year, and is continuing to develop her creative practice in ceramics, sculpture, and painting.
